23 anni fa i Cathedral<\/b> ci trascinavano negli inferi per un lungo ed appagante viaggio, oggi ci portano a visitare l’ultima guglia della loro discografia. Questo “The Last Spire” come composizione \u00e8 probabilmente sotto la loro media ma \u00e8 spiritualmente molto ispirato ed in ogni attimo si sente pulsare una band pi\u00f9 viva che mai: un disco pi\u00f9 lento dei tre precedenti, un animale ferito che si trascina per rimanere disperatamente aggrapato alla vita, un’entit\u00e0 che non vuole morire.Lee Dorian \u00e8 demoniaco come sempre, Brian Dixon una garanzia. Il riffing di Gaz Jennings per\u00f2 non \u00e8 spietato come in “The Guessing Game”, e quello che forse manca pi\u00f9 di tutto sono le trame di basso di Leo Smee: Scott Carlson qui si limita ad un compitino che aggiunge poco e niente al sound.
\nDopo l’evocativa intro (“Bring out your dead!”) apre le danze la lunga “Pallbearer”, dove come nel resto del disco gli arrangiamenti vengono arricchiti di tanto in tanto da fiati, voci femminili ed altri strumenti old-fashion che aiutano i timidi ma piacevoli inserti prog: siamo comunque distanti dai fasti di “The Voyage of the Homeless Sapien”. Nel brano da cui \u00e8 tratto il primo video, “Tower of Silence”, cos\u00ec come nelle rimanenti tracce abbiamo una rassicurante conferma del loro stile, una voce graffiante ed evocativa su rocciose atmosfere decadenti che oscillano tra gli Anni 70 ed il doom pi\u00f9 pesante. Tutto il disco anche se senza picchi scorre via liscio che \u00e8 un piacere fino a che non si arriva al vero pezzo da novanta che \u00e8 la conclusiva “This Body, Thy Tomb”: malinconica, mastodontica, ossessiva. Il maestoso finale \u00e8 la spirale che ci riporta lentamente in superfice anche se non avremmo mai voluto rivedere la luce del sole.

23 years ago Cathedral<\/b> drag us to hell for a long and pleasing journey, today they take us to admire the last pinnacle of their discography. “The Last Spire” is probably under their average, speaking of composition, but spiritually very inspired and you can actually feel every second their living spirit pulsing underneath: the album is slower then the previous three, a wounded animal desperately longing to keep alive, a creature that doesn’t want to die.
\nLee Dorian is devilish as always, Brian Dixon is a guarantee. Gaz Jennings’ riffing instead isn’t as pitiless as in “The Guessing Game” and what’s is probably most of all missing are Leo Smee’s bass rhymes: Scott Carlson here confines himself to a small job which adds less or nothing to the sound.
\nAfter the evocative intro (“Bring out your dead!”) the long “Pallbearer” opens the games, in which, as in the rest of the record, arrangements are sometimes enriched by wind instruments, female voices and others old-fashioned instruments which help the shy but pleasant progressive inserts to come out: however, this is very far from the feasts of “The Voyage of the Homeless Sapien”. In the track (also first video) “Tower of Silence”, as well as in the remaining tracks, Cathedral’s style is reassuringly confirmed, with the scratching, rocky voice stretching towards decadent atmospheres, that go from the more Seventies ones to the heaviest doom. The record slips away smoothly, without any peak until the real big shot, the closing track “This Body, Thy Tomb”: melancholic, colossal, obsessive. The majestic final act is an upward spiral bringing us back to the surface… Although we didn’t wanted to see the sunlight ever again.
