Alla fine, i Flamingods<\/strong> ce l\u2019hanno fatta. Levitation<\/em>, il loro quarto album edito da Moshi Moshi, \u00e8 uno dei dischi pi\u00f9 rappresentativi della nuova scena neo-psichedelica. Per Loud and Quiet<\/em> \u00e8 un lavoro che \u201cvuole farci tornare il sorriso dopo tre anni di caos Brexit\u201d, per Billboard<\/em> \u00e8 \u201cun concentrato di rock alternativo, funky, psichedelia, influenze mediorientali e beat irresistibili\u201d, per Source<\/em> ha \u201cun suono unico che rompe i confini\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In realt\u00e0, la questione \u00e8 molto pi\u00f9 semplice: la band ha tirato fuori da questo genere il meglio che si possa ascoltare oggi in circolazione, l\u2019ha trascinato sui palchi dei festival pi\u00f9 importanti del mondo e infine nelle playlist di chi la psichedelia non sapeva neanche cosa fosse. In occasione dell\u2019uscita del nuovo album, ne abbiamo approfittato per fare qualche domanda ai diretti interessati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ciao ragazzi. Innanzitutto, ci raccontate da dove arrivano i Flamingods dato che avete una storia tutta particolare alle spalle.<\/strong>
Tre di noi \u2013 Kamal, Sam e Charles \u2013 sono cresciuti insieme su una piccola isola del Medio Oriente, il Bahrein, mentre Karthik \u00e8 cosmopolita: \u00e8 cresciuto tra Roma, l\u2019Albania, l\u2019Arabia Saudita e Dubai. Ci siamo trasferiti in Gran Bretagna per studiare all\u2019universit\u00e0 e uscivamo insieme a Londra prima di creare la band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma \u00e8 vero che come gruppo vero e proprio siete nati dopo una mega jam all\u2019ATP Festival?<\/strong>
\nS\u00ec, in parte \u00e8 vero! In passato Kamal aveva gi\u00e0 registrato del materiale sul quale avevamo jammato insieme, e il nostro primo concerto l\u2019abbiamo fatto al Paper Dress Vintage, il vintage shop del nostro manager, nell\u2019East London. Le jam all\u2019ATP avvennero pi\u00f9 o meno nello stesso periodo ed essenzialmente non hanno fatto altro che cementare il nostro amore per la musica pi\u00f9 sperimentale, ritmica e catartica, che ha aperto le porte al nostro sound degli inizi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Levitation<\/em><\/strong> \u00e8 il <\/strong>vostro quarto album. In che modo si differenzia dai vostri lavori precedenti? <\/strong>
\n\u00c8 senza dubbio l\u2019album pi\u00f9 coeso che abbiamo fatto finora. Ed \u00e8 conseguenza dell\u2019essere rimasti soli in studio, tutti insieme, a lavorare sulle canzoni, per la prima volta dagli esordi della band. Abbiamo dovuto vivere per alcuni anni distanti l\u2019uno dall\u2019altro per vari motivi!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Levitation<\/em><\/strong> \u00e8 una sorta di concept album o c\u2019\u00e8 comunque una storia dietro? E perch\u00e9 avete scelto questo titolo?<\/strong>
\nNei nostri precedenti lavori c\u2019era sempre un concetto o una storia che univano i brani del disco, ma Levitation<\/em> \u00e8 aperto a pi\u00f9 interpretazioni. Ci piace l\u2019idea che l\u2019ascoltatore decida da solo quale sia l\u2019argomento centrale dell\u2019album. Nell\u2019insieme, il disco \u00e8 un\u2019esplosione ed esplorazione di idee e concetti, che, in qualche modo, sono rappresentati dall\u2019artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ascoltando il vostro disco si percepiscono tantissime influenze: la disco funk turca, il jazz, i Beatles, l\u2019exotic e la musica psichedelica che arriva da ogni angolo del mondo. C\u2019\u00e8 una qualche ispirazione per voi nella musica contemporanea?<\/strong>
\nSiamo fortunati ad essere in compagnia di tante band che ammiriamo e ci ispirano costantemente come Snapped Ankles, The Comet is Coming, Alt\u0131n G\u00fcn e The Mauskovic Dance Band, giusto per citarne alcune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prima come facevate a registrare i vostri dischi dal momento che ognuno di voi viveva in un Paese diverso?<\/strong>
\nQuesto \u00e8 stato il nostro primo disco dal nostro esordio con Sun<\/em>, nel 2013, per il quale eravamo nello stesso studio tutti insieme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Che tipo di strumenti usate? Nei vostri lavori si ascoltano percussioni, strani strumenti a corda, sintetizzatori vintage\u2026<\/strong>
\nCerchiamo sempre di espandere il nostro arsenale musicale ad ogni album, ci aiuta ad espandere il nostro suono. Per Levitation<\/em> abbiamo usato il saz, un importante strumento popolare turco: \u00e8 simile a una chitarra a sei corde che ci ha permesso di attingere a quel suono mediorientale che non avevamo mai esplorato prima. Lo potete ascoltare chiaramente nella traccia Nizwa<\/em>. Abbiamo inoltre usato vari synth come il KORG MS2000 e il Micro Korg, oltre a samplers come il Roland SP-555. Infine abbiamo usato un piccolo pedale chiamato Count-to-Five: \u00e8 simpatico e sbarazzino e compare in alcune canzoni come Olympia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avete registrato il disco al Total Refreshment Centre: \u00e8 davvero un posto cos\u00ec suggestivo e stimolante come si dice in giro?<\/strong>
\nLo \u00e8 davvero solo grazie al tipo di persone che passano l\u00ec regolarmente per fare musica, film o organizzare eventi. Lo studio di registrazione e lo spazio principale, dove le persone si rilassano e vengono organizzati gli eventi, sono abbastanza vicini, cos\u00ec spesso capitava che mentre stavamo registrando e avevamo bisogno di una piccola pausa, potevamo uscire e chiacchierare di musica o altro e invitare qualcuno a registrare qualcosa di veloce con noi, un\u2019esperienza che si \u00e8 poi rivelata incredibile. \u00c8 un luogo ideale per le persone che la pensano allo stesso modo, dove c\u2019\u00e8 rispetto e sostegno reciproco per i rispettivi progetti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raccontateci qualcosa in pi\u00f9 del video di Marigold<\/em>, che avete girato in Oman, e del vostro viaggio in Marocco per il Beat Hotel Marrakech. <\/strong>
\nKamal era in contatto con un fotografo in Oman, il suo nome \u00e8 Ali Sharji. Ali ci ha fatto entrare in questo gruppo di biker che vivono in una citt\u00e0 chiamata Nizwa. Ci ha detto che erano essenzialmente una banda di motociclisti che avrebbe semplicemente cavalcato queste incredibili moto presenti nel video in tutta la citt\u00e0, moto che in passato appartenevano ai loro padri. Con alcuni nostri amici di Dubai, i Satwa 3000, siamo andati ad incontrarli e abbiamo trascorso due-tre giorni nel deserto, girando con la banda di motociclisti ed esplorando alcuni degli angoli pi\u00f9 nascosti dell\u2019Oman. \u00c8 stato un viaggio davvero emozionante: il Medio Oriente \u00e8 la nostra casa quindi ogni opportunit\u00e0 di esporre al mondo la sua bellezza culturale \u00e8 una vera delizia per noi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quanto al viaggio in Marocco, Marrakech \u00e8 stato un altro momento clou di quest\u2019anno. Era la prima volta che visitavamo il Paese come band. Siamo rimasti quasi una settimana nella Medina in una bellissima villa con i nostri amici pi\u00f9 cari e abbiamo esplorato quei luoghi, mangiato ottimo cibo e incontrato alcune persone incredibili lungo la strada, amici con i quali siamo ancora in contatto. Il tutto \u00e8 stato completato da uno show davvero divertente anche al festival, che \u00e8 un evento davvero da sballo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diteci la verit\u00e0: vi piacciono compositori italiani come Piero Umiliani ed Armando Trovajoli?<\/strong>
\nAssolutamente! Piero Umiliani in particolare \u00e8 stato una grossa influenza nella scrittura del nostro album precedente, Majesty<\/em>, nel quale abbiamo esplorato il nostro amore per la musica exotic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quando si pensa a Dubai, solitamente la mente va a hotel di lusso ed enormi grattacieli. Com\u2019\u00e8 davvero la vita da quelle parti ed esiste una scena musicale laggi\u00f9?<\/strong>
\nS\u00ec, \u00e8 vero, ed \u00e8 interessante perch\u00e9 \u00e8 sicuramente il modo in cui i media e, in un certo senso, gli stessi abitanti di Dubai vogliono rappresentarsi all\u2019esterno. La realt\u00e0 \u00e8 che si tratta di un luogo piuttosto vario, con un sacco di cose da fare a livello culturale ma che molte persone non conoscono. Se qualcuno viene qui per fare un viaggio, specie nelle parti pi\u00f9 antiche di Dubai, si ritrover\u00e0 davanti un mondo di culture diverse: pakistani, bangladesi, filippini, etiopi, nepalesi e molti altri che vivono in stretta vicinanza l\u2019uno con l\u2019altro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quando vivevamo l\u00ec, andavamo al nostro locale nepalese preferito, lo Yak n Yeti, che serve il miglior cibo, propone la migliore musica dal vivo e le migliori vibrazioni che si possano desiderare. Tutti quelli che si incontrano a Dubai hanno spesso una storia interessante da raccontare su come sono finiti l\u00ec, ed \u00e8 un luogo pieno di sorprese se si \u00e8 disposti a esplorare questo Paese e ad andare oltre gli hotel di lusso e i grattacieli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anche la scena musicale e creativa \u00e8 interessante perch\u00e9 \u00e8 in continua evoluzione. Credo che un problema di Dubai sia che spesso le persone non vi rimangono abbastanza a lungo per coltivare e far crescere una scena, cos\u00ec spesso accade che c\u2019\u00e8 un\u2019esplosione di creativit\u00e0 e di eccitazione che di solito cresce e poi muore per poi manifestarsi in qualcos\u2019altro dopo tre o quattro anni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avete dei lavori o riuscite a vivere con la vostra musica? Nel primo caso, come riuscite a bilanciare la musica con le vostre vite quotidiane?<\/strong>
\nAbbiamo tutti altri lavori oltre alla band. Siamo grati di aver raggiunto un punto in cui possiamo sia lavorare quando ne abbiamo bisogno e sia fare musica e andare in tour quando \u00e8 necessario. Non \u00e8 sempre facile, ma si fa ci\u00f2 che si deve!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viviamo un periodo storico caratterizzato dalla paura e dalla paranoia verso l\u2019Altro, in cui si costruiscono muri fisici e muri \u201cmarittimi\u201d, specialmente nel Mediterraneo. Voi fate musica con strumenti tradizionali, che arrivano da ogni parte del mondo, e avete provenienze diverse nella band: pensate che la musica possa servire ad abbattere in confini e i muri, persino quelli \u201cinvisibili\u201d?<\/strong>
\nCi auguriamo proprio che lo faccia. Purtroppo hai ragione, c\u2019\u00e8 una narrazione che sta crescendo per la quale dobbiamo essenzialmente stare con i nostri simili e chiudere \u201cl\u2019altro\u201d fuori. Noi sentiamo che \u00e8 un messaggio spaventoso e sconvolgente che deve essere messo in discussione. La difficolt\u00e0 ovvia \u00e8 quella di esporre le persone a culture e suoni in un modo che non vengano percepiti come qualcosa di \u201cminaccioso\u201d ma piuttosto di divertente ed emozionante, e penso che sia quello che cerchiamo di fare attraverso la nostra musica: mostrare che questi diversi suoni e modi di vivere possono coesistere e che ci sono molte somiglianze tra loro se le persone sono disposte a smettere di giudicare e ad osservarli abbastanza intensamente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flamingods, psych music for a rave off of the edge of the world<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, Flamingods<\/strong> made it. Levitation<\/em>, their fourth album released by Moshi Moshi, is one of the most representative records of the new neo-psychedelic scene. Loud and Quiet<\/em> stated they \u201cwant to give us something to smile about, even after three years of Brexit chaos,\u201d Billboard<\/em> described Levitation<\/em> as \u201ca concentration of alternative rock, funk, psych, Middle Eastern influences and compelling beats,\u201d Source<\/em> applauded \u201ctheir unique sound that breaks boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, it\u2019s a lot simpler \u2013 Flamingods brought out from this genre the best that can be heard today, dragged it onto the stages of the world\u2019s most important festivals, and finally in the playlists of those who didn\u2019t even know what psychedelia was. On the occasion of the release of the new album, we took the opportunity to ask a few questions to those directly concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hello guys. Please, first of all, tell us where Flamingods come from, as you’ve got an unusual backstory. <\/strong>
\nThree of us, Kamal Sam and Charles grew up together on a small island in the Middle East called Bahrain, and Karthik grew up in placed like Rome, Albania, Saudi and Dubai. We all moved to the UK for university and hung out together in London before starting the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it true that your story as a band began from a big jam at the ATP Festival?<\/strong>
\nThere is some truth to that yeah! Kamal had already recorded some early stuff that we\u2019d often jam together, and we had our first ever show at our manager\u2019s vintage shop, Paper Dress Vintage, in East London. The ATP jams were around a similar time and it essentially just cemented our love for raw experimental, rhythmic and cathartic music which opened the door to our early sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Levitation<\/em> is your fourth album. How is it different from your previous works?<\/strong>
\nIt\u2019s the most cohesive thing we\u2019ve done so far, and I feel that was down to us being in the same room together working on the songs as group for the first time since the early days of the band. We had to endure a few years apart from each other for various reasons!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is Levitation<\/em> a kind of concept album or there is a story behind it? And why did you call it Levitation<\/em>?<\/strong>
\nOur previous albums had more of a concept around them, but Levitation<\/em> is more open for interpretation. We like the idea of the listener making up their own mind as to what the album is about. The whole album is really explosion and exploration of ideas and concepts, which is also, in a way, represented in the album artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listening to your album we can feel you like Turkish disco funk, jazz, Beatles, exotic, and psychedelic music from all over the world. But who inspire you in contemporary music?<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019re fortunate to be in the company of a lot bands that we admire and inspire us constantly like Snapped Ankles, The Comet is Coming, Alt\u0131n G\u00fcn and The Mauskovic Dance Band to name a handful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you made a record when the band wasn\u2019t in the same country most of the time?<\/strong>
\nThis was the first record since our first, Sun<\/em> back in 2013, where we were in the same room together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What type of instruments (percussions, strings, vintage synths, etc) do you use?<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019re always looking to expand our musical arsenal for each album to help expand our sound. For Levitation<\/em> we used a Turkish baglama saz, which is this beautiful 6 stringed instrument similar to a guitar that allowed us to really tap into that Middle Eastern sound that we hadn\u2019t really explored before. You can hear it more prominently on the track Nizwa<\/em>. We also use various synths such as KORG MS2000 and Micro Korg, as well samplers like Roland SP-555. We also used this fun and cheeky little pedal called the Count-to-Five on a few tracks like Olympia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You recorded the album at the Total Refreshment Centre: how is it a such inspiring place?<\/strong>
\nIt\u2019s really just down to the sorts of people that come through regularly to either do music, film or put on events. The recording studio and the main space where people chill and hold events are really close to each other, so often we\u2019d be recording and if you need a little break you can go out and have a chat about music or whatever and invite someone in to record something real quick that turns out to be incredible. It\u2019s a great place for likeminded people where there is mutual respect and support for each other\u2019s projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us more about the video for Marigold<\/em> you shot in Oman and your Morocco trip at Beat Hotel Marrakech.<\/strong>
\nKamal was in touch with a photographer out in Oman called Ali Sharji who filled us in on this group of Omani bikers living in a town called Nizwa. He told us they were essentially a biker gang that would just ride these incredible motorbikes featured in the video throughout the town which their fathers used to own. Along with our friends from Dubai, Satwa 3000, we went out there to meet them and spent two to three days out in desert filming with the biker gang and explored some of the more hidden aspects of Oman that was really exciting for us. The Middle East is our home and so any opportunity to expose the world to its cultural beauty is real treat for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marrakech was also another highlight from this year. It was our first time visiting the country as a band. We stayed there for almost a week deep in the Medina in a beautiful villa with our closest friends and essentially explored, ate great food and met some incredible people along the way who we\u2019ve still kept in touch with. It was all topped off with a really fun show at the festival too which was also pretty dope!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
